Quote For 25th Birthday

My 1st May in Helsinki

The sun and the :-) celebrate life

Just arrived in Helsinki and the Ship gone, we headed to third with thousands of people in the Kaivopuisto , a huge city park in Helsinki with green spaces, large granite stones and around the port - a beautiful scenery. At 10:30 clock already many people were there, but it was still quite possible to look for a nice place. We settled on a rocky hilltop and spread out our few sweets and our fuel Zwein. Typical is a picnic with cakes, salads, meatballs, grilled food, etc. etc. - and lots of alcohol. But as we came directly from Stockholm, which was of course not possible. Some friends of henna and Jari, the later joined us, but had lots of goodies could start there and the picnic. They also brought two traditional terms, 'Munkki' (a kind of pastry) and several bottles filled with , Sima '. This drink is prepared in special ways, and about a week left to ferment. Simply delicious :-) For all the sweet yet been distributed M & Ms (which were only introduced last year in Finland)!

Again we were blessed with sun (in winter it was really warm jacket ;-) and my sunburn was delighted with more sunblock sun ;-) of course, was not in sight) and had beautiful views of the sea. Every hour there were more and more people and soon everyone seemed possible space occupied. It offered me be a colorful and beautiful picture: All who have ever graduated from high school, wearing their white hats, they've gotten to a conclusion. This once a year on 1 May taken out and put on. There were also worn different costumes, as we are common during Carnival. However, this was an exception. In addition, students wore their traditional brightly colored overalls : each department has its own color and others. All possible patches on the overalls are collected, to the students for a certain amount of alcohol drunk received or for any party that they have visited, etc. The students have

with the ceremonies and the wearing of overalls a week before the first May started. But only on 30 By 18 April each year clock starts officially the student and workers' meeting, here called Vappu. The Havis Amanda (female statue in the fountain at the Port of Helsinki) is then placed the white cap and it is initiated with champagne. Then the party starts and the students take over the city. The 1st
May is more a student than a labor convention in Finland. But actually, the 1 May the "hangover" day after the festivities and drinking the previous day. My experience was (to 30.04. I have not even seen, I was in Stockholm), the day that people need to be more or less sober. To this end, they gather in parks and picnic with friends, and drink more comfortably. In this case there was a relaxed and positive atmosphere. People had fun and were in good spirits. We see the Finns do not always ;-)

One problem with such open-air celebrations are always the public toilets. It was in the park but placed several portable toilets, but not nearly enough for the mass of people. The high alcohol consumption we saw some of these were ugly scenes ... But we have this henna, Jari and I are against 14 clock (the park was at this time full of people) back to the city have gone 45 minutes in the Silja Line - Terminal waited until we could go to the bathroom ... in the city crowds were constantly in motion. People came and went. The trams stopped in the city center no more. I ask myself all the time, where do these people all came! You see it out of town! It seems as if 1 May crawl out of their holes, the sun and alcohol to lure them ;-)

drove the afternoon we ever in our homes, to make us something fresh. We were already pretty exhausted from Stockholm and the sun ;-)
evening I met again with henna in the city center and we took the observer roles: the crowds were gone, but the alcohol effects were clear. People (young and old, men and women, rich and poor) staggered through the streets, fell down over curbs or stumbling steps, vomited, were no longer able to speak properly, danced in a trance, cried out loud in their Phones in or shouted at in public, fighting over a seat at the tram stop, although the bank had plenty of room, laughing loudly about themselves and others, talked to strangers or aping them for what they are in everyday life not in the able - indeed, they look no more once; asleep leaning on the trams, on park bench, on house walls, at bus stops, and they drank on and on ... Many people were seen in bars, where the hockey game between Finland and Slovenia has been transferred. Ice hockey is a national sport here, but even then it is the Finns can not understand it, to cheer loudly for your team. But in a drunken state that everything is much easier and the social norm is thrown overboard: it is crying and cursing, until one's voice does not ... Moreover, many young people were at night-club entrances snake.
Henna told that there would be full again by 4 clock in the morning. For as Pubs, bars and clubs made up and people were hungry. You would want to fast-food kiosks and as the snake wrangling would continue ...

Overall, the atmosphere was on 1 May in Helsinki, however great, positive, peaceful and very missed! The people have had fun and to celebrate the sun and their lives. That was great! I found it very relaxing and I have won many more impressions of the Finns and taken positive memories! 1. May in Helsinki: every time again :-)
