Kupumzika Karibu (welcome rest)

It is by now quite a while since I last wrote. It is not that there would be nothing to tell, but I had in the last few weeks do not really feel like writing down everything. In between I've written only a few keywords. Today is Saturday and for today I've done nothing more than to produce from these keywords, your text.

stand So I'm still the last time I think with my runny nose ... so the now cured and I get good air again and otherwise it's looking good for my health.

Then I had reported in the last entry of our water problem ... it has not improved but rather deteriorated. For now there is no more and the neighbors even more, so water is now truly a luxury at all. We need it in large containers in the city Now for exorbitant prices and then find someone who brings a vehicle on over here. This means that we also have a first time had no water and have not come to water, and so then had to sometimes even a day or two longer than planned to wait for the shower or washing clothes again. This can disturb you and you may be upset about it too, but ultimately it can also accept and get used to it.

in the house here has changed a lot since my last entry:
first Nadia and Lara, the two German girls are gone. Since then, Mareen, Eva and I here alone in the house. It is calmer in the house and I now feel that now slowly developed the constellation that will make my next year to spare-to-home. And most importantly: I have now received my final room, which was previously occupied by one of the girls still get. Now I have a kind of mosquito tent and even a closet. Now that I no longer live out of a suitcase and could make my room a bit more personal, I feel equally at ease. Incredible what a simple cabinet so all accounts. I have a few photos of hanging at home and get the look is always a bit homesick.

second We have a new cooker. Does not sound spectacular, it was for us here, but sort of. The panel had previously worked no longer even a few years under their belts and the one side, so that with food like rice and beans to the beans first and then the rice was cooked. Now we have a new album and now both can be cooked simultaneously. There was a real little party with Pilau (typical solid meal, rice with special spices, meat and salad). For the financial situation here, that was a really big acquisition.

After these Events needed Mareen and I first vacation =) Well, at least we moved away for a week. Early October was in fact a delegation of Tanzanian AG of my old school, the Lise Meitner-Gymnasium, visit our partner school in Tanzania Lyakirimu-Secondary School at the foot of Kilimanjaro. It has always been a big wish of mine to visit once this school and so the opportunity was ideal. Mr. Gutshall, head of the Tanzania-AG has prepared us for the contact with the school and so were also invited to visit the school again. Only nine hour bus ride to school and parted like the Kilimanjaro to see with my own eyes. In the dark and rather wearily of the rapid bus we reached our destination and were welcomed warmly. To get to school we had to climb another very steep road, but up here we were we rewarded with a kind of feast for our trip. Potatoes, rice, pasta, vegetables, meat, juice and fruit - all delicious really, we were really spoiled and there should be a normal meal. Because it was getting dark we could not see and we are tired already slipped into our sleeping bags early. The next morning we were able to see the light at school, but the Kilimanjaro remained hidden behind clouds. And it was especially cold one ... for sure not as cold as in Germany, but unlike Morogoro but very cold, had a fortune I packed two sweaters.
The people in the countryside at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro are much more religious than here in the city. Before each meal, a prayer spoken and God has been mentioned frequently in the talks and there it was Sunday, we went together with the coordinator of Lyakirimu-school and some students in the service. It was explained to us that this is a kind of Sunday school and, accordingly, the church was full of children. These children should now sit quietly in the next two and a half hours and listen to the sermons of the pastor and his helpers. Sung was little and I hardly understood anything. One woman spoke of parents their children are not to send buy liquor ... Well in any case, the children naturally could not remain half hours sitting quietly and as a consequence, women presented with small sticks at the exits to the children at the romping run out and to prevent. At the end of the service were then once again asked all present in her two rounds anyway scarce money to sink into the offering sticks. I can not explain exactly, but I had some feel that religion is harmful there, rather than good because they have worked on me through their deep faith in God somehow naive.
on Monday could then also the students of the partner school, they find, like every morning, they gathered at about eight on the sports field for morning roll call and prayer. Through the thick fog you could not even see the whole playing field ... to see the Kibo, it was impossible to think. We then looked at us a few lessons. The lessons we have seen usually works in such a way that the teacher in front the whole time on the basis of a book says something and the students complete their rates of repetition. example: Teacher: "Unprotected sexual intercourse causes HIV and AIDS. Unprotected sexual intercourse causes ", now all students," HIV AND AIDS ". The students speak up in class to a single word that is almost not at all. In the Secondary-School classes are taught in English by default. The problem is what we found, however, that many teachers here can not speak English so well to do that. Often, some passages are not translated in Swahili in addition to make people understand everything. The next few days we have seen yet more lessons. On the last day we went to Lyakirimu a lake on the Kenyan border, the so-called Lake Chala. On the day of our trip could remove it then see the first time, the Kilimanjaro. Long he has to wait on the roof can then showed the roof of Africa in all its glory.

On the way we have taken a Unweg a small town to fill up even while we have driven past a house that has been burning brightly. Everywhere people stood around and stared and no one was able to extinguish the fire. Although there is a fire but only in the big cities and the next big city in this case Moshi about 30km away. We are with the car drove past it and had to watch helplessly, as anything save the owner of the house could no longer burned. A child cried out for our help, but what we should align. I felt helpless and did not want to watch or look away only, but also all other people who could do no more standing around. On the way back from filling up again because we had to drive past and now was also a fire truck arrived and as it had come without water, now people were on the roof of the fire engine and water from a tanker truck filled with buckets into the tank. Whether the unloading operations already have achieved initial success, I could not see, because everywhere people stood around - no police, who cordoned off the fire location. We sat helplessly continue our journey.
Out of the city, we reached dirt roads, over which we have gone and yet we have aufgewedelt so much dust that the view through the rear window was just red and also in the car dust was becoming more and more, he seemed somehow from down in the Car rise.

The Lake Chala is a kind of crater, and has just underground inflows coming from the Kilimanjaro. The view was beautiful. Above the crater rim a very dry landscape and the bottom of the crater, a green forest. Two opposites so close together. We are guided by a guide, climbed into the crater and could enjoy as well as the view from below. Even here, though the photos speak the clearest language.

The next day, the delegation of the Tanzania-AG went to Dar es Salaam and we both are right there to Moshi to two days to make tourist-vacation. I'm so happy happy and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to have our partner school, for which I have worked on various bazaars and in the Tanzania-Ag to see itself again, although I am not a member of the school anymore.

tourist-vacation in Moshi: The first thing to find a hotel. An immediate hit. Huge room with private bath and running water =) And the best balcony with Kili view, two nights double room 20EUR, glorious. We were received with the sentence: "Karibu Kupumzika. Kupumzika (rest) one of the main activities here. Sometimes you do need to rest even from nothing ... In the city was then first sketched the Touriläden where it is missing scoured in Morogoro, and bought the first Longmen =) Moshi is a total contrast to Morogoro much more whites are on the roads, the houses are much larger and there are shops with shop windows! as trivial as it may sound, it has cut us out of the shoes. In Morogoro stores consist of a grating behind which someone sitting gives one the things I want to buy. And in Moshi, there was suddenly supermarkets and shops, cash register scanner with windows. And then we have the guide yet is read from a bakery that will also sell black bread. Brown bread, you would not believe how good bread if you miss it every day just a kind of white toast. Well the erwieß only as a sticky black bread and rye bread without seeds, but there were a French baguette, which was really lovely and there was this cheese, fairly expensive, but wonderful. In Morogoro, there is even yet to buy cheese that is imported from New Zealand, which was produced from Moshi in Tanzania and we had to treat us.
In the evening there was always a Kilimanjaro beer with a view of Mount Kilimanjaro on our balcony. Summer vacation.

Back in Morogoro was our Swahiliunterricht release. Meanwhile, it runs with the Swahili pretty good, even if it is no thanks to the lessons we take. Usually we talk to all Tanzanians only Swahili and only if there is uncertainty or it is too complicated, we deviate from now and then into English. Our teacher then surprised us with an idea. He suggested that we once his class for a few minutes to teach English reinzuschnuppern only once into teaching. Not entirely convinced of his Whole idea to teach without preparation, we arrived in class and were first greeted warmly. Without knowing the whole situation regarding the class had found, we have tried two sets of Swahili into English with the students to translate. Although the sentences were really just the students had great difficulties and the phrase "I buy a cup of" they have not managed to translate. We then dissolved and tried to explain the translation piece by piece. Then a few minutes had already passed, but this experience has already given me a bit of courage even sometimes teach a whole hour.

Last weekend we have in common with Eva and two other Tanzanians made a trip to the Rock Garden. The Rock Garden is an enclosed piece of about 3 km distant river that comes down from the mountains. In the river are at this point, particularly large stones some of which are small waterfalls and dam up the water a bit, so you can splash in the water at least something. At a bar in the Rock Garden also serves soda. The Rock Garden Admission costs 1000 shillings (50cent), actually. So we then to fifth, three blacks, two whites. The three Tanzanians themselves had no money and expected it for granted that we do for accept the entry. This in itself is not much of a problem, but the expectation is to maintain the connected annoys me somehow. No preliminary questions whether we can accept the entry, even no money at it, whites have to pay ... well OK. But suddenly we should pay 7000Tsh. For whites it took was suddenly 2000Tsh. We could not understand why we should pay more just because we are white. We have presented our residence certificate and tried on the regular admission price to exist ... without success. We had to pay double the price just because we are white, although on paper we actually residents of Tanzania are. Just imagine Just imagine Germany would have more blacks to enter the swimming pool, etc. To pay what could be going on. It felt very uncomfortable at being treated this way not to say racism experience. And the best is yet. We know someone who knows the boss of the Rock Garden. When we told him about our experience, he has the head of the Rock Garden called to question him about the strange admission prices. But with him about the 2000Tsh only the regular price of 1000Tsh has arrived, the rest of the money is on its way from the cashier went to the head disappeared, so this is how it really I could enjoy the trip no longer, we have something our feet into the water and are kept rumgeklettert on the stones and have already begun the return trip soon.

beginning of last week we went again to the office of Faraja Trust Fund and have pressed for soon to be entrusted with the right tasks. We were sent out in a school, have spent the last week as our afternoons. However, to teaching without which we would certainly have been allowed, but we went too fast. We would rather see something in school life and in the classroom to get an insight into how it runs in school and on what knowledge the students. Unfortunately, not the teacher so legally able to give detailed information about us. So we were in the past week on four days in the school (on Thursday was again Playday) and have seen at this time only two hours of which shall exceed half an hour. The entire rest of the time students have spent either in the classroom alone, made the school clean or prepare lunch. The first lesson was that we have seen English, 1 Class:
The students are fun in the classroom, jump over benches and tables throw themselves with objects that suddenly causes a child: "Mwalimu anakuja" ("The teacher is coming"), all the children rush to the platform and sat down to second or third in a bank.
The teacher comes in, it is a small, stocky woman with a big buttocks (a striking number of women I have seen so far, have this characteristic at =)). The students stand up and greet the teacher in the choir. The teacher responds and asks the students to sit down, the students sit down. The teacher begins in quite harsh tone to speak. Because she speaks very fast I understand very little, it seems to go so that the children have made too much noise. The teacher then talks himself Rage takes your textbook and each Child gets a text book - no, not to read - hit on the head. After she is finished she strides to the blackboard
and writes with a giant chalk "English" on the board, including "Prepositions". It begins prepositions in Kiswahili to say and the students to interview for meaning in English. A student knows all the popular terms while the others just silently sit and type on demand no response. The teacher is again very harsh in tone, she asks the students vehemently but they can not answer. Only one student may again give the correct answer. As a reward, sends the Teacher her outside. After a few moments it comes back again, with a Bambußstock. The teacher takes the floor. The teacher walks again through the ranks each student must hold up his hand and the teacher fails with the stick in his hands. The students make pained faces, and some take it out still, some ask for clemency, but the teacher knows no mercy and beats any child cursing loudly in the palm of the hand except one student who knew the answers. After this round is finished, the teacher goes to dinner again some tasks writes to the table and leaves the class. For them, the lessons to end. The students are now actually edit the tasks, but does not break as to be expected again from a big uproar. Whether or not it took effect some tasks of attention I can not say, but I doubt it.

This was the first lesson was to have seen our future work. It must sound terribly again, somehow it answered very well. But I can not currently say whether that was the norm or a particularly glaring example. In any case, we were pretty depressed, as like you left class. As it should be as forward with the development of Tanzania, where the elementary element of the development on the formation of this type ways takes place or not take place.
After the hour we were formerly school building in the shadow of the other teachers (all women!), When suddenly came out several children with a boy who had a very bloody face and cried. The bleeding boy sat on the floor and two other boys on a chair which was still free. instead to comfort the crying boy asked the teacher the other two boys that had gone before. They began to talk very quickly, so I understand that not everything again. In any case, they told of a fight with a wooden bar and pointed again to a boy as the perpetrator. The two were sitting so proud of this chair, proud to be able to describe the teacher the process. They seemed to feel really great also, which struck even his legs. The boy was crying now for Holzklohütte to wash himself. Alone, none of the consoles in, like I had him put my hand on his back, helped him wash the face, but was afraid, afraid to do something that the teachers were displeased.
The teacher is now dictated the alleged perpetrators themselves. He had to stand in front of her and she lifted the stick. He should turn his back to her, but he did not, he fears what lies ahead too much. For mercy pleading, he tried to escape the blows still. Again and again called for the teacher to turn up. But he had too much fear. The bleeding student who was still crying no one gave more attention.
Then the teacher stood up, grabbed the boy, turned him and began to beat him with a stick. He tried to escape but they held in, bashing still on his back. He finally could free himself and run a piece of it, the teacher continued to beat him up after he was too far away. Now both boys were crying. For the teacher, this case was done, she sat down again furiously.

After this event, we had to calm down first. It was terrible to watch everything with the feeling of helplessness. The beating we could not finish. We can not come from a foreign country, we look at everything and then say, "No that's not going." There is one school here simply means that the students are beaten. It is impossible for me not to take the teachers personally resent that they interact with the children, even if it is completely normal.
If we teach but we can do differently, then we can show that it can work differently. If the event even more Positive is to win, I still have taken more courage to teach yourself to have a go.

On Friday before we had a second lesson, bring them again to describe in such detail, I want to do without at this point. It was definitely a conciliatory event. No child was beaten, the teacher has even brought a small panel on the blackboard and the children have said pretty much the same. At one point was even laughing, why I do not know. Certainly this was not a model for good teaching, but it was about a lot more conciliatory.
Next week we visit another school and then it might go too soon, that we teach ourselves. After all, we are already nearly two months here.

Merilyn Sakova Stript

final sprint at the Loop Trail "Romantic Hicke reason"

The new circular route "Romantic Hicke reason" will be completed soon. The planning of the way in which the home club was also involved in related, has been held for over a year. Finally now the route is set, which now has the form of a given 8, the middle piece passes in Lower Dressel at the village hall and Hicke ground where the "official start point" will be with blackboard.
The trail has a length of about 22km and carries a piece the Rothaarsteig, past the big stone and clay pit "on the cross" and affect the states of Hesse and Rhineland Palatinate.
We were the home club in recent months, mainly concerned with the identification of the route. No easy task, as coming from any direction, the correct path for the walkers will be apparent immediately .

The official opening of the trail is for 24 October 2010 scheduled from 11 clock, with a hike from the ground floor to the Hicke Lützelner quarry hut.
