mlima unaita (The mountain calls)
The Ulugurumountains which are located southeast of Morogoro is an ideal area for walking. As described in this blog some time ago we were sometimes even for a day hike in the mountains and had the Morningside visited a former German colonial buildings.
This time it should go a little further and a little longer. Friday morning, a few weeks ago now, we started a three-day trek to the top of the Morogoro nearest peak, Mbondwa to venture. We say that, Mareen, Eva, Ignas, Emilian, Hussein and me.
Before we had well provided with food: 5 kg rice, 2kg beans, 2kg maize flour and bits and pieces as Tea and salt. Then with a few spare clothes and sleeping bags or blankets everything in the backpacks. Yes Backpacks ... Mareen and I had our own and have not said anything since the other, am I expected that you have bags to pack your things until I asked on Thursday evening times. As I looked into the bewildered faces, they also had obvious nor even made any clue. It was time for another typical kind of very many people think that I have met only at the moment and hardly beyond. And since they had just not yet packed up their bags, they had also not had any thoughts about into which it. Well well I asked, with the pockets of Mareen and me, a small backpack or by Ignas and a bit to pack up, we were able to stow all our luggage, the bags were quite full. I was worried that we could not store the tents that we should at the foot of the mountains get in a camp, but the problem should resolve itself ...
were for Friday morning, we then arranged to meet at 7am at our hostel. An appointment with Tanzanians at 7 AM, that means the earliest just before eight, therefore we can place our comparison also only just before seven - we thought ... at 6.50 clock and Emilian Hussein stood at the door and Mareen still in pajamas and a toothbrush in Mouth. Well, there are also times and wonder ...
Shortly after 8 should go there then. The backpacks were distributed all of us, Eva wanted to carry the big backpack of Mareen - yet. Fully packed, we had six then go towards the mountains, pretty funny, we were looked at with our backpacks. Even before we reached the city limits to some extent, could not Eva. Several times we had warned them that there would be no picnic, but they wanted to and now bear even the big backpack. She then gave the Emilian large backpack and carried himself only a very small bag. So we could go on first. Soon we reached even was the city limits and it slowly uphill. On the last shop before the mountains we bought 12 liters of water and thought we should now also store this burden, but we met a friend of Ignas, who works up in the Morningside and we offered to carry the water up and all this without pay, an offer that we do not approve of it. Yet the road was not steep and well fastened, and soon we reached the base camp where we should get our guide and tents. This cleared up then my fear is that we could not store the tents. Pengo our guide had in fact nothing to wear for our three-day trip he had his scout suit and that's it. So he could take the few with no problems. So then off we went, and now the way was always narrow and steep and after a short time Eva was exhausted more completely, now she could not even carry a small bag, which then took Mareen this in addition to her backpack. Again we managed a bit and I was struggling quite on the way was just damn steep and the sun beat down on us. Eva wondered meanwhile already own to turn back, but together very slowly with many pauses we made it then at lunch time to reach again the Morning Side. Totally exhausted we arrived took off their bags and took off their shoes. The road we had taken this time was much harder than the last of our trip up here. He was friend of Ignas long with our water above and not only that, he had already prepared us for lunch. Rice and beans =), as well as here above they have never tasted nor do I think.
After dinner we slept in the shade a bit first. We had planned to hike in the afternoon on, but Eva was not able to do so and Emilian, Hussein, Ignas, Maree and I went to the river and bathed in a place with a small waterfall a little bit, that was great.
The next morning we could hardly convince Eva continues to come with us, but it worked. And so we continued our trip with renewed vigor. After a short time we reached the tree line to the rain forest. Here in the Ulugurumountains it one of the last of the mountain rain forests in the world, with unique animal species, at least, says the guide =). to run in the rain forest was again a very different feeling. Not that it suddenly started to rain there now, but everything is overgrown was much cooler and humid, and in so many places the road was also quite slippery. In the forest are provided Hussein and I run while the others together with Eva were traveling a little slower. A few hours we walked through the forest to reach the summit. And at every clearing, it was hoped to be able to see the top, but the only thing you could see was that the power line, could lead to the top, went even further than you see through the slightly misty air. We wondered why there was a power line up, not even on the Morningside and there was now a power line apparently led to the top. Finally, after a thousand curves and felt now plagued by a bubble with a hoe, we reached a grid. And suddenly we heard children's voices and then also with two men arrived on the other side of the grid to meet us. So what strange that we walked for hours through the forest and have not seen a soul and then we get to the top and suddenly teeming with people. After a brief discussion with the two men that led to the happiness Emilian, could we pass the gate and bring the final steps to the summit behind us and then we had done it, we had reached the top, quite broken, but also proud. The summit, however, offered in addition to the many people yet another surprise to him was located next to a house that is also a huge radio tower. Now it was clear why a power line up there is after. From here Morogoro is irradiated by a handful of radio stations and TV channel we receive in the hostel. And the associated house is full of devices which regenerate the signal. The men who came to make us live up there in the house and take care of the art, which seemed not to understand about it. The Children were there on the day just visiting and went back again in the evening from the next village.
About forty-five minutes came after us then the other with Eva in tow at the top. Eve was indeed broken but it was really powerful to have done it proud.
Unfortunately, I can do to the amount only approximate. Above, I asked our guide on the level: "What we are now actually up from Morogoro." Guide: "Approximately 60km" Me: "What 60km," I thought maybe he thinks the track and not the amount, although that too would be far too much. Me: "No, I mean the height, not the line" Guide: "Ah, the height. The are thirty miles. "Waaahhh, thirty kilometers, which is for a spinner it, I tried again. Me: "So, flying planes, about 10 kilometers altitude and we're still below the aircraft is not it?" He: "Yes, we are among the aircraft." Me: "So we high we are now then?" He: "20km" Me: "Ah yes!" What a crackpot. And this is a guide by profession, who does nothing else than bringing people to 60km height, or 30, or 15 ... Well I
again later searched for the height, but unfortunately I have found nowhere accurate information, but that such in 2500 we would have to be ascended. This is not a Kilimnajaro, but the German Zugspitze is just under 3000m and not that much higher.
After we had rested ourselves a bit, we wanted to climb the mast to an even better chance to have. When we were just half way up but then went on clouds and when we reached the top were, we could not even see the foot of the tower. An excellent view was no longer think. The clouds were also no longer, instead, it soon began to rain and we moved us inside, where there was a TV =), of course, with the in-house signal ...
The men offered us to sleep in the house and we were happy us not to sleep in a tent in the rain need. But as we went to sleep then we quickly decided wanted to. Because the transmitters, there was in all the rooms, made so much noise that we wanted to sleep in a tent outside rather than in the noise. Only Eva, Ignas and the guide were asleep inside.
The next morning we needed boil water for tea. Our water that we had taken was all up here and there was nobody else. But before we woke up had already started walking three of the men to fetch water. They had until about the level of Morningside descend to get water. And then rise with full 20l bucket again and that is a basic need like water to breastfeed. Anything you eat up here they must walk at least two hours to the next village and the commonplace, the animals were real.
After tea and ugali with beans for breakfast we were on our way back. We had to create this time in a day the way down. First to Morningside, where the friend of Ignas waited again with a lunch on us and then also the rest down by the hot section of the route. Halfway between Morningside and the City of Eva then worked together almost. She sat down and getting up, her legs folded it away again. She was quite desperate and could barely walk on. With great difficulty she managed to the point where the road during the colonial period up to Morningside led, was reopened to traffic. There we sat them on a motorbike taxi home. We continued our descent and made it so just before dark, the hostel pretty much exhausted to reach. Eva had already been cooked ugali so that we had to conclude once again all together before we were tired in our beds. The sore muscles the next day announced himself already.

Uchaguzi Mkuu (presidential elections)
At 31 October were presidential elections in Tanzania. We are feverishly awaiting this event a long time and had at least respect for the possible reactions of the population on the outcome of the vote. In the last elections came in 2005 at least in Zanzibar riots.
soon as I arrived in early September in Tanzania were to see election posters everywhere. First and foremost: "Chagua Kikwete! Chagua CCM "," Select Kikwete! Choose CCM "
The party CCM - Chama cha Mapinduzi (as much as party of the Revolution), had been responding since independence from the colonial powers in Tanzania. It was also the revered here very, now deceased, politicians Julius Nyerere, who wanted to establish its own African Socialism (Ujamaa =) in Tanzania. Ujamaa was based on nationalization, decentralization and reflect on the traditions. The sense of community to strengthen played a major role in Nyerere's policy.
Until 1992, Tanzania was a one-party state under the leadership of the CCM. In 1992, after the resignation of Nyerere (1985) then the multi-party system was introduced. But so far all have been elections, the CCM was able to say with an overwhelming majority. None of the opposition parties played a major role in elections and political business. The allegations of corruption within the party and was Saatapparates but bigger and has resolved to this day. Since 2005, the current President Jakaya Kikwete is in office.
Under his rule, the allegation of corruption yet been confirmed, and so played the theme of corruption the decisive role in this election campaign.
The main opposition party, the party CHADEMA has gone into the race. CHADEMAs leading candidate, Dr. Wilbrod Slaa has been especially critical of the previous government and the fight against corruption is written on the flags.
was in the last hot phase before the election, the city is full of campaign. Especially from Kikwete, for he stood with his party the most resources and the best infrastructure available to the campaign. Everywhere the great Kikwete posters were visible through the streets drove trucks over the large speakers herausbrüllten the slogans of the CCM. To humans often were also people in the party colors yellow and green dress, who danced. Often there were also major events, and the politicians to end their voice their speeches to the people to have beaten his ear.
posters or other events of the opposition parties were much smaller and less frequent than that of the CCM.
In the last week before the election, however, came from Dr. Slaa CHADEMA to Morogoro. We could not escape us, of course, and are also out. Slaa came flying by helicopter and spoke about an hour. Quite a few people had come to hear Slaa and cheer loudly.
It seemed as if it Slaa succeed in convincing many people and to inspire a change in policy. Not but only in Morogoro in Tanzania. Publish to a pre-election poll Slaa was even before Kikwete. And it seemed as if it would be really exciting. But many people with whom we spoke, said only admit that the CCM would still win again. Not to the people of the CCM would hindrehen somehow so that it again is enough for a victory for the CCM. Of corruption and election fraud Stimmenklau often been mentioned. Quite a lot they said would not vote, because in their eyes does not matter anyway, so suspicious and disappointed they are faced with the policy. What is frustrating for a situation.
Then came the day of election. Sunday, 31 October 2010th The city was much calmer than the day before. As well as in Germany, took place on election day no election takes place. Mareen and I are in the school district was held here in the events around us sometimes to see up close. Everything seemed well-organized. A lot of campaign workers were on site, plus one or two security guards. Voters had to be registered on a list to be allowed to choose. On presentation of an identity proof they received the ballot papers which they could fill in a cardboard drawn blinds. Then, the voters threw his campaign workers supervised by a ballot paper in plastic boxes that served as polling stations. All very reminiscent of the voting process in Germany. When we
but are being held in town, but we have also seen a polling station, which seems at least somewhat funny. In the middle of the sidewalk in the city were placed a few tables and surrounded with some cardboard, then this place was used as a polling station. That was funny already, but a sign of irregularities in the elections was not.
the evening of the election, we went to the bar on the corner, because there is a television which receives all channels via satellite (Our TV via antenna receives only one and heard a politician of the CCM ...) Full Voltage So we were sitting in front of the TV, expecting that every moment would be the first projections showed just as we are just normal. And so we sat and sat and waited, waited ... Nope. There was no such thing as extrapolation is not, at least we have none of the posts on TV as such can make and the people we asked said, all that a result is still unknown. And so we waited, we kinda went home to bed the next morning to get up and switch back to full power on the TV, only to be told that it will take, until a result is published. Eventually we learned that a result was expected for Tuesday. But also Tuesday were not disclosed, Wednesday the same thing. Thursday lunch then there was finally a press conference the election management. had spent hours numbers were read, what of it now that we were interested in. I do not know, was definitely the Kikwete told us at the end with the CCM won again times. In an article I found Internet I learned also that he and 61.17% of the vote again, a large majority, if compared to the last election shrunken majority, has won the vote. Dr. Slaa of the CHADEMA reached only disappointing 26.34%.
The CCM had done so once again. So many people I've talked to have said that it is finally time for a change. Hardly anyone who has been convinced after the CCM. Yet over 60% ... After the election we heard the allegations of corruption, electoral fraud and Stimmenklau be louder, many people are really disappointed, they had hoped, at least, this time it would be different. In particular, many students were angry about the election. They accused the government of manipulating the election indirectly. It was expected that many young people, particularly students would choose CHADEMA. The voting is only possible to register on the site of one is. That is almost all students in their university. Before the election, however, were the semester break and just before the election, the government extended the vacations, so that was the end of the holiday until after the election. Many students, it was financial reasons can not go back prior to the study to the study. They were prevented indirectly in the election. From the anger came in Dar es Salaam and Mbeya in riots and fights with the police. This we did but with only through television. Registered in Morogoro where we have noticed is there, everything remained peaceful.
I myself will not give an opinion on the course and outcome of the election. In the international coverage of the election, which in Germany is a close one, no reports of irregularities. International election observers, of which we have in the election of Dr. Slaa have stated the correct choice for ... Many Tanzanians see it differently.

Is It Normal To Have Mucus When Your Period
first lessons and the first malaria
We have made it. We have informed the first time a class alone. As I have indicated in the last entry already, we do not have attended another school in which we could teach. For the first time everything went off a little more organized. An employee of Faraja has brought us Tuesday morning in the car to school. When we had just arrived were all pupils of the school, about 60, the school building before the morning roll call. To the call Then all the students of the school principal synchronous sideways back and forth until they stopped breastfeeding after the next call back all at once. Then they sang the Tanzanian national anthem. This morning roll call, here is a daily morning ritual. After the singing of the employees took the word of Faraja and introduced us. The students greeted us with applause and even the head teacher welcomed us through the usual "Karibu sana" ("Welcome").
then drove the staff of Faraja away again and 4 teachers who were there asked us to sit down. At first it seemed as if it would be just as at the another school: sitting all day doing nothing useful. The 10 students in fourth grade and 50 !!!!! (Other classes are not) students of the second class were sitting alone in their classrooms and we sat in silence with the teachers out there. We were waiting to get any tasks and the teachers probably were waiting on us to say what we wanted but first of all communication is gone in my pants. Neither we nor the teachers were able to start a conversation. But suddenly we one of the teachers expressed an English book in his hand and asked us to teach. This was the first most important step. We did not feel while in the able to teach off the cuff, we were able to communicate with the teacher that book to take home with them and then prepare for the English lesson for the fourth class for the next day.
The next day we arrived with a prepared English lesson in the luggage in the school. After a brief greeting with the other teachers, we were immediately sent into the classroom. There they waited for us, the class, 3 students. All others were sick or could otherwise not attend classes we have been told. Well anyway, we were ready for a lesson taught in English and then just only three female students. Topic: "May I borrow your book," according to textbook and curriculum (yes, there is one that has us very surprised) to learn the students forms of politeness in communication. We have found our previous visits to other schools that students talk about how, or not even as good in the classroom. But the teacher is teaching very much fixed. So we are equipped with tools, books, newspapers, pens and what we have found so come to school to train with the students in short role-playing etiquette and the same speaker. We started with an example and then have the students themselves to each other . Yes, you may "also practiced? May I borrow your ruler" Or, "No I am sorry, I do not have a ruler ..."
to first explain the construction of the sets behind you and make notes, we use a language mix of English and Swahili, so that students understand us, we can express ourselves and we just like the students learn something. We have the students can even take us to the timidity and to improve if we have made a mistake in Swahili. After this time, I had a really good feeling. The first lesson, the We have made all by himself to his feet, even if only for three students.
The next three we then put our lessons continued in the fourth grade even when times were only two students there. After class we then asked (on advice of our predecessors) if there was to correct only Schwups test and we had a stack of 50 math tests on her lap, all of whom wanted to be corrected. The quality and readability of the tests varied greatly. Only one student reached 100%, the range of 80% -95% 0% was just as common. It took a while until all the test were corrected. The next day, now and in the Next week the students had to write to state intermediate examinations and were therefore in a different state (and not by Faraja Trust Fund organized) school. Therefore, a math teacher gave us a book of the second class and asked us to now for the second class to teach math: multiply written. - Oh man, 50 students, second grade and then, without proper preparation. We asked for a few minutes of preparation. As we thought about how the whole deal was, I was kotzübel at once. I got up to make a few steps, went behind the school building and then it was no stopping it I threw up violently (a blessing, each House a garbage dump behind the house). Then I felt better and went with Mareen in the class to begin to teach. But soon I realized that it was no good and took my mare and the class. I had to have a bad conscience Mareen teach alone, but I could not really. I first tried to ride a bike, but I had to give up after a short pause. Again and again I had to give micht on the way home. It was a pain to get home. On the way people looked at me again and again invited me to an angle or a sit down, but I just wanted to quickly go to bed. When I finally arrived home, I left my bike just are on the horizon, it still managed to grab me a bucket, put me without saying a word to bed. Eva came in a short time later, concerned that she immediately suspected that I had malaria. We arranged the afternoon to go to hospital. I slept through the afternoon, only interrupted by the passing, all the time. Afternoon I was feeling better again but I had fever, but had to give me any more. We went to the hospital which is only two houses on. Hospital in this case but rather what we conceive under a doctor's office. After a short conversation with the doctor was a little blood from my fingers spread on a glass plate and after 15 minutes came the test result: Malaria. I was given the appropriate drugs for malaria treatment, painkillers and glucose. Then I paid the equivalent of 4.40 Eur yet and already we were able to go home. For me it was now getting better, my fever dropped. Then I started, I do not know exactly why to doubt whether I really had malaria. The more I went the less I wanted to swallow the drugs. I decided to wait another day and leave the next day to make a second test at another hospital. I woke up the next morning at fever-free and went to a hospital in the city. For 25 cents left to take another test and after half an hour I had the first malaria also already survived - test result is negative. It was fortunate I had listened to my gut feeling. I do not know but what I have to throw up, the malaria was definitely not.

Kupumzika Karibu (welcome rest)
It is by now quite a while since I last wrote. It is not that there would be nothing to tell, but I had in the last few weeks do not really feel like writing down everything. In between I've written only a few keywords. Today is Saturday and for today I've done nothing more than to produce from these keywords, your text.
stand So I'm still the last time I think with my runny nose ... so the now cured and I get good air again and otherwise it's looking good for my health.
Then I had reported in the last entry of our water problem ... it has not improved but rather deteriorated. For now there is no more and the neighbors even more, so water is now truly a luxury at all. We need it in large containers in the city Now for exorbitant prices and then find someone who brings a vehicle on over here. This means that we also have a first time had no water and have not come to water, and so then had to sometimes even a day or two longer than planned to wait for the shower or washing clothes again. This can disturb you and you may be upset about it too, but ultimately it can also accept and get used to it.
in the house here has changed a lot since my last entry:
first Nadia and Lara, the two German girls are gone. Since then, Mareen, Eva and I here alone in the house. It is calmer in the house and I now feel that now slowly developed the constellation that will make my next year to spare-to-home. And most importantly: I have now received my final room, which was previously occupied by one of the girls still get. Now I have a kind of mosquito tent and even a closet. Now that I no longer live out of a suitcase and could make my room a bit more personal, I feel equally at ease. Incredible what a simple cabinet so all accounts. I have a few photos of hanging at home and get the look is always a bit homesick.
second We have a new cooker. Does not sound spectacular, it was for us here, but sort of. The panel had previously worked no longer even a few years under their belts and the one side, so that with food like rice and beans to the beans first and then the rice was cooked. Now we have a new album and now both can be cooked simultaneously. There was a real little party with Pilau (typical solid meal, rice with special spices, meat and salad). For the financial situation here, that was a really big acquisition.
After these Events needed Mareen and I first vacation =) Well, at least we moved away for a week. Early October was in fact a delegation of Tanzanian AG of my old school, the Lise Meitner-Gymnasium, visit our partner school in Tanzania Lyakirimu-Secondary School at the foot of Kilimanjaro. It has always been a big wish of mine to visit once this school and so the opportunity was ideal. Mr. Gutshall, head of the Tanzania-AG has prepared us for the contact with the school and so were also invited to visit the school again. Only nine hour bus ride to school and parted like the Kilimanjaro to see with my own eyes. In the dark and rather wearily of the rapid bus we reached our destination and were welcomed warmly. To get to school we had to climb another very steep road, but up here we were we rewarded with a kind of feast for our trip. Potatoes, rice, pasta, vegetables, meat, juice and fruit - all delicious really, we were really spoiled and there should be a normal meal. Because it was getting dark we could not see and we are tired already slipped into our sleeping bags early. The next morning we were able to see the light at school, but the Kilimanjaro remained hidden behind clouds. And it was especially cold one ... for sure not as cold as in Germany, but unlike Morogoro but very cold, had a fortune I packed two sweaters.
The people in the countryside at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro are much more religious than here in the city. Before each meal, a prayer spoken and God has been mentioned frequently in the talks and there it was Sunday, we went together with the coordinator of Lyakirimu-school and some students in the service. It was explained to us that this is a kind of Sunday school and, accordingly, the church was full of children. These children should now sit quietly in the next two and a half hours and listen to the sermons of the pastor and his helpers. Sung was little and I hardly understood anything. One woman spoke of parents their children are not to send buy liquor ... Well in any case, the children naturally could not remain half hours sitting quietly and as a consequence, women presented with small sticks at the exits to the children at the romping run out and to prevent. At the end of the service were then once again asked all present in her two rounds anyway scarce money to sink into the offering sticks. I can not explain exactly, but I had some feel that religion is harmful there, rather than good because they have worked on me through their deep faith in God somehow naive.
on Monday could then also the students of the partner school, they find, like every morning, they gathered at about eight on the sports field for morning roll call and prayer. Through the thick fog you could not even see the whole playing field ... to see the Kibo, it was impossible to think. We then looked at us a few lessons. The lessons we have seen usually works in such a way that the teacher in front the whole time on the basis of a book says something and the students complete their rates of repetition. example: Teacher: "Unprotected sexual intercourse causes HIV and AIDS. Unprotected sexual intercourse causes ", now all students," HIV AND AIDS ". The students speak up in class to a single word that is almost not at all. In the Secondary-School classes are taught in English by default. The problem is what we found, however, that many teachers here can not speak English so well to do that. Often, some passages are not translated in Swahili in addition to make people understand everything. The next few days we have seen yet more lessons. On the last day we went to Lyakirimu a lake on the Kenyan border, the so-called Lake Chala. On the day of our trip could remove it then see the first time, the Kilimanjaro. Long he has to wait on the roof can then showed the roof of Africa in all its glory.
On the way we have taken a Unweg a small town to fill up even while we have driven past a house that has been burning brightly. Everywhere people stood around and stared and no one was able to extinguish the fire. Although there is a fire but only in the big cities and the next big city in this case Moshi about 30km away. We are with the car drove past it and had to watch helplessly, as anything save the owner of the house could no longer burned. A child cried out for our help, but what we should align. I felt helpless and did not want to watch or look away only, but also all other people who could do no more standing around. On the way back from filling up again because we had to drive past and now was also a fire truck arrived and as it had come without water, now people were on the roof of the fire engine and water from a tanker truck filled with buckets into the tank. Whether the unloading operations already have achieved initial success, I could not see, because everywhere people stood around - no police, who cordoned off the fire location. We sat helplessly continue our journey.
Out of the city, we reached dirt roads, over which we have gone and yet we have aufgewedelt so much dust that the view through the rear window was just red and also in the car dust was becoming more and more, he seemed somehow from down in the Car rise.
The Lake Chala is a kind of crater, and has just underground inflows coming from the Kilimanjaro. The view was beautiful. Above the crater rim a very dry landscape and the bottom of the crater, a green forest. Two opposites so close together. We are guided by a guide, climbed into the crater and could enjoy as well as the view from below. Even here, though the photos speak the clearest language.
The next day, the delegation of the Tanzania-AG went to Dar es Salaam and we both are right there to Moshi to two days to make tourist-vacation. I'm so happy happy and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to have our partner school, for which I have worked on various bazaars and in the Tanzania-Ag to see itself again, although I am not a member of the school anymore.
tourist-vacation in Moshi: The first thing to find a hotel. An immediate hit. Huge room with private bath and running water =) And the best balcony with Kili view, two nights double room 20EUR, glorious. We were received with the sentence: "Karibu Kupumzika. Kupumzika (rest) one of the main activities here. Sometimes you do need to rest even from nothing ... In the city was then first sketched the Touriläden where it is missing scoured in Morogoro, and bought the first Longmen =) Moshi is a total contrast to Morogoro much more whites are on the roads, the houses are much larger and there are shops with shop windows! as trivial as it may sound, it has cut us out of the shoes. In Morogoro stores consist of a grating behind which someone sitting gives one the things I want to buy. And in Moshi, there was suddenly supermarkets and shops, cash register scanner with windows. And then we have the guide yet is read from a bakery that will also sell black bread. Brown bread, you would not believe how good bread if you miss it every day just a kind of white toast. Well the erwieß only as a sticky black bread and rye bread without seeds, but there were a French baguette, which was really lovely and there was this cheese, fairly expensive, but wonderful. In Morogoro, there is even yet to buy cheese that is imported from New Zealand, which was produced from Moshi in Tanzania and we had to treat us.
In the evening there was always a Kilimanjaro beer with a view of Mount Kilimanjaro on our balcony. Summer vacation.
Back in Morogoro was our Swahiliunterricht release. Meanwhile, it runs with the Swahili pretty good, even if it is no thanks to the lessons we take. Usually we talk to all Tanzanians only Swahili and only if there is uncertainty or it is too complicated, we deviate from now and then into English. Our teacher then surprised us with an idea. He suggested that we once his class for a few minutes to teach English reinzuschnuppern only once into teaching. Not entirely convinced of his Whole idea to teach without preparation, we arrived in class and were first greeted warmly. Without knowing the whole situation regarding the class had found, we have tried two sets of Swahili into English with the students to translate. Although the sentences were really just the students had great difficulties and the phrase "I buy a cup of" they have not managed to translate. We then dissolved and tried to explain the translation piece by piece. Then a few minutes had already passed, but this experience has already given me a bit of courage even sometimes teach a whole hour.
Last weekend we have in common with Eva and two other Tanzanians made a trip to the Rock Garden. The Rock Garden is an enclosed piece of about 3 km distant river that comes down from the mountains. In the river are at this point, particularly large stones some of which are small waterfalls and dam up the water a bit, so you can splash in the water at least something. At a bar in the Rock Garden also serves soda. The Rock Garden Admission costs 1000 shillings (50cent), actually. So we then to fifth, three blacks, two whites. The three Tanzanians themselves had no money and expected it for granted that we do for accept the entry. This in itself is not much of a problem, but the expectation is to maintain the connected annoys me somehow. No preliminary questions whether we can accept the entry, even no money at it, whites have to pay ... well OK. But suddenly we should pay 7000Tsh. For whites it took was suddenly 2000Tsh. We could not understand why we should pay more just because we are white. We have presented our residence certificate and tried on the regular admission price to exist ... without success. We had to pay double the price just because we are white, although on paper we actually residents of Tanzania are. Just imagine Just imagine Germany would have more blacks to enter the swimming pool, etc. To pay what could be going on. It felt very uncomfortable at being treated this way not to say racism experience. And the best is yet. We know someone who knows the boss of the Rock Garden. When we told him about our experience, he has the head of the Rock Garden called to question him about the strange admission prices. But with him about the 2000Tsh only the regular price of 1000Tsh has arrived, the rest of the money is on its way from the cashier went to the head disappeared, so this is how it really I could enjoy the trip no longer, we have something our feet into the water and are kept rumgeklettert on the stones and have already begun the return trip soon.
beginning of last week we went again to the office of Faraja Trust Fund and have pressed for soon to be entrusted with the right tasks. We were sent out in a school, have spent the last week as our afternoons. However, to teaching without which we would certainly have been allowed, but we went too fast. We would rather see something in school life and in the classroom to get an insight into how it runs in school and on what knowledge the students. Unfortunately, not the teacher so legally able to give detailed information about us. So we were in the past week on four days in the school (on Thursday was again Playday) and have seen at this time only two hours of which shall exceed half an hour. The entire rest of the time students have spent either in the classroom alone, made the school clean or prepare lunch. The first lesson was that we have seen English, 1 Class:
The students are fun in the classroom, jump over benches and tables throw themselves with objects that suddenly causes a child: "Mwalimu anakuja" ("The teacher is coming"), all the children rush to the platform and sat down to second or third in a bank.
The teacher comes in, it is a small, stocky woman with a big buttocks (a striking number of women I have seen so far, have this characteristic at =)). The students stand up and greet the teacher in the choir. The teacher responds and asks the students to sit down, the students sit down. The teacher begins in quite harsh tone to speak. Because she speaks very fast I understand very little, it seems to go so that the children have made too much noise. The teacher then talks himself Rage takes your textbook and each Child gets a text book - no, not to read - hit on the head. After she is finished she strides to the blackboard
and writes with a giant chalk "English" on the board, including "Prepositions". It begins prepositions in Kiswahili to say and the students to interview for meaning in English. A student knows all the popular terms while the others just silently sit and type on demand no response. The teacher is again very harsh in tone, she asks the students vehemently but they can not answer. Only one student may again give the correct answer. As a reward, sends the Teacher her outside. After a few moments it comes back again, with a Bambußstock. The teacher takes the floor. The teacher walks again through the ranks each student must hold up his hand and the teacher fails with the stick in his hands. The students make pained faces, and some take it out still, some ask for clemency, but the teacher knows no mercy and beats any child cursing loudly in the palm of the hand except one student who knew the answers. After this round is finished, the teacher goes to dinner again some tasks writes to the table and leaves the class. For them, the lessons to end. The students are now actually edit the tasks, but does not break as to be expected again from a big uproar. Whether or not it took effect some tasks of attention I can not say, but I doubt it.
This was the first lesson was to have seen our future work. It must sound terribly again, somehow it answered very well. But I can not currently say whether that was the norm or a particularly glaring example. In any case, we were pretty depressed, as like you left class. As it should be as forward with the development of Tanzania, where the elementary element of the development on the formation of this type ways takes place or not take place.
After the hour we were formerly school building in the shadow of the other teachers (all women!), When suddenly came out several children with a boy who had a very bloody face and cried. The bleeding boy sat on the floor and two other boys on a chair which was still free. instead to comfort the crying boy asked the teacher the other two boys that had gone before. They began to talk very quickly, so I understand that not everything again. In any case, they told of a fight with a wooden bar and pointed again to a boy as the perpetrator. The two were sitting so proud of this chair, proud to be able to describe the teacher the process. They seemed to feel really great also, which struck even his legs. The boy was crying now for Holzklohütte to wash himself. Alone, none of the consoles in, like I had him put my hand on his back, helped him wash the face, but was afraid, afraid to do something that the teachers were displeased.
The teacher is now dictated the alleged perpetrators themselves. He had to stand in front of her and she lifted the stick. He should turn his back to her, but he did not, he fears what lies ahead too much. For mercy pleading, he tried to escape the blows still. Again and again called for the teacher to turn up. But he had too much fear. The bleeding student who was still crying no one gave more attention.
Then the teacher stood up, grabbed the boy, turned him and began to beat him with a stick. He tried to escape but they held in, bashing still on his back. He finally could free himself and run a piece of it, the teacher continued to beat him up after he was too far away. Now both boys were crying. For the teacher, this case was done, she sat down again furiously.
After this event, we had to calm down first. It was terrible to watch everything with the feeling of helplessness. The beating we could not finish. We can not come from a foreign country, we look at everything and then say, "No that's not going." There is one school here simply means that the students are beaten. It is impossible for me not to take the teachers personally resent that they interact with the children, even if it is completely normal.
If we teach but we can do differently, then we can show that it can work differently. If the event even more Positive is to win, I still have taken more courage to teach yourself to have a go.
On Friday before we had a second lesson, bring them again to describe in such detail, I want to do without at this point. It was definitely a conciliatory event. No child was beaten, the teacher has even brought a small panel on the blackboard and the children have said pretty much the same. At one point was even laughing, why I do not know. Certainly this was not a model for good teaching, but it was about a lot more conciliatory.
Next week we visit another school and then it might go too soon, that we teach ourselves. After all, we are already nearly two months here.

The Marina Contraception
Pole pole (slowly)
early last week we used our bikes make a right and have a small bicycle tour made. Although it is quite exhausting to ride on the saddle too low, we have come quite far. In the vicinity of about 5 km from Morogoro, there is a reservoir with the water of the water supply is applied to Morogoro. This is the wonderful scenery of the Ulugurumountains. On the main road we drove to within sight of the lake and then tried cross-country to reach the lake. On a tiny pretty bumpy road, we came to shore, where they had a beautiful view of the lake and the dam. But it is only a small piece of the bank and was cycling was impossible because of the soggy soil. Suddenly, a fisherman approached us and immediately came Mareen and me horror stories of fishing knives in the head, but he we tried only with a Swahili-English spoken language, body language mix to make it clear that we have to search the lake nothing. So we are back to the street and have a new start directly reaches the dam, where we could go after a brief discussion with two men in the very same language mix. From here, offered us an even more beautiful view and it was really fun to drive, past the fishing people and herons that flew away before us. An happiness Mareen had made a week before my arrival even find a road on which we are heading now able to complete our round. Meanwhile, there was in fact only six clock at half past six in the evening and it's dark at seven then it is pitch black. We had to return quickly to watch. But after a short confusion we found the road and are safe before dark again arrived at home.
Since Thursday, we at least have a regular appointment. Monday to Friday at ten clock we have for two hours Swahiliunterricht. However, the quality of teaching is already different than they are accustomed from Germany. The teacher even speaks only (middle) moderate English and often formulated sentences in which even I notice that they are completely wrong. What is truly regrettable is that he is a teacher of English at a school for Tanzanian children. speak Swahili Well he can, but unfortunately, he has the logic behind his language, itself not understood. All the I am happy that I have already received in Germany, explained the logic of the Swahili. The Swahiliunterricht in Germany was really great and was worth it. Mareen also benefited. When our teachers, we can now exercise at least formulate sentences and try to win us from speaking practice.
Hey your home! Were you showered today already on the toilet or have you this morning or yesterday evening, or even a bath? Yes? How? Just go and press the flush and the shower faucet on and ready? Probably. And so it goes here often work, but for now quite rare. For the moment that is just tap water and this means that there pretty much all day the tap water is shut off, as they just did well, and the water from our tank is also scarce. Since the human needs remain, however, and runs with some neighbors the water, we have to fetch water in buckets. And then there Eimerklospülung and bucket shower. This is also quite good, but not so comfortable. And when you realize then know that running water is quite a luxury that is for us a matter of course.
meantime I'm also the first time ill ... but no malaria, sleeping sickness, cholera, and what there is still so beautiful, just a cold, boringly normal, yet annoying when a runny nose all day. My paper handkerchief stock is running low and I have to slowly look around for alternatives, I still have a nasal spray bottle, but it would be better to be healthy again soon.
So then Stuffed Greetings from Morogoro

How To Put On Stayfree Pads
Next new impressions
I've already pretty much tell. Last week I experienced a lot, so much that I wrote down the not get behind.
I will start with a visit to a dance group: For many young people here, everyday life is quite monotonous. Some have to work all day as Ally from the shop opposite the EVERY DAY OF UP TO 6 am 22h in the store and sold his goods. Others go to school or attend college and learn when they come home. But even for leisure, there are hardly any offers. More impressive (Kiswahili for dancing), the visit to the group Kucheza Kiduku was. In a large, open, thatched hut every afternoon, some young people including two girls meet to dance. To Western but also to modern African music they make acrobatic dance exercises, which are probably the best of Hip-Hop to describe, but many of his own African elements. They study together a custom choreographies and also connect to this at parties, weddings, and to earn some pocket money to do so. Really impressive how loose, casual and at the same acrobatic and precise, they can move their bodies. And above the stage where the "Great" Dance determined 20 small children have you tried to do the same. With big eyes they have seen their role models, and then even tried to end stand, handstands, cartwheels and other exercises to the beat of the music. A really beautiful picture.
The next day I did the first time something where I had the feeling that it might belong to my work. Mareen, Dane, Nadia and Lara and I have jointly visited the orphanage Faraja, about 20 minutes by Dalla Dalla out of the city. When we arrive we rush towards the children already clutching my legs and want to be taken for a ride. You have me and Mareen never seen and yet they are completely without fear of contact, so they are pleased with our visit. It takes some time until we have managed to enter by the gate. The orphanage has a very large courtyard around which the house is built. At first glance, no one can see except the children, the children walk around alone in the courtyard, the older ones seem to be a watchdog for the little ones to feel. Only after several minutes comes from an area one of the nuns who serve as surrogate mothers out here and greeted us in Swahili. The welcome is no longer a problem to say :-)
The kids take me all the time by the hand and want to walk around with me while I go to the other children back. The joy of potential playmates seem to be huge. Most children wear dirty clothes and broken, some runny nose, many children with wet pants, it smells of urine. I try to be my role to meet and play with as many children as possible. I feel uncertain, but the kids take me with her so open nature of the fear of contact. After a short time is a somewhat older white woman, an American. They brought balloons. "Polizo" echoes from about 30 to 40 grooves, the children are happy and thrilled with this toy come return to us so that we inflate the balloon. Later we go to the playground of the orphanage. There is a seesaw, two slides, several swings, a roundabout and a climbing frame, pretty cool. The children want Anschwung get on the swings and are collected when jumping down from the climbing frame.
order lunch time the children are summoned to dinner. On the tables seem to be arbitrarily small plastic bowls distributed only in some bowls and there is a spoon. There is ugali (Maismehlbreikloß) with vegetables. The nuns have said Dane, that it is often difficult to buy food for all children. But Dane says that if the bishop is, there are tons of food. Nevertheless, as 4kg spaghetti for the children brought.
The children sat as seemingly random at the tables and the dishes are as long pushed back and forth until each child has a bowl. At each table sit one to two nuns begin with a few spoonfuls of the many children to feed. Some children also have their own spoon and eat themselves. Even during the meal the children want to touch me all the time. A child comes with his bowl to me and indicated wanting to be fed by me, I try as long as it comes to a nun and says that the child can eat themselves and should be. At the next table makes a child instead of fax to eat and then it happened the first time: The nun pulls out her stick and beating the child, passing without warning just like that and then it is again. The child is immediately stopped and looks offended. I knew I would be confronted with something, but it is seen to be truly still something different. It's difficult simply to sit and tolerate the fact that it is quite normal here. After dinner the children go to bed and we go back home. I'm thirsty, I feel dirty and I feel the smell of urine assumed to have, but that's OK I have the feeling of having done something and can at home drinking and shower. I know that this report has a rather bitter aftertaste, this is how I described how I felt it, but still is the merit of the orphanage, which offers these children a home does not diminish.
HBC - Home Based Care, it is another project of Faraja, we visited the next day. As its name suggests, takes care of the HBC to children who are suffering from AIDS or other diseases or children whose parents died and now living with relatives, although not have the financial means to feed another child, or any other need Families. Families can help the HBC requested and there will then decide whether a family is jointly supplied. First of all, we went to the market and have rice and beans bought 8kg each. With deep pockets, we went to the house from HBC in order to discuss with staff which families we should visit. Four families, we have set ourselves up for lunch and off we went, from one family to the next 20 to 30 minute walk. The families usually know nothing about our previous visit and there is also no guarantee that they are at home. Of the four families two at home, we had to wait a awhile and we have not met, the rice and the beans are we still got rid of by neighbors or relatives who promised to pass it. For the families we have met we have been asked to clean, have food delivered and talk a while with them. It was interesting in the various apartment to look inside, in a we were asked to put forward to existing chairs and sofas in the other, the room was completely filled by a bed on which we have sat down in the last home just a mat lying on the ground on which we sat down. I'm not sure what to make of our visit to the families. I do not like the looks of HBC's ordinary work, but with our visits, I had the feeling not to do much. Even if the families have got determined, to talk to us about our visit, I have to be somehow got the feeling only to rice and beans to pass. What is a good thing for sure, but under home based care, I had expected something more. Once in a moment, the HBC Playday held in HBC-house, which is a great thing, but more on that later.
Regardless of the benefits of these visits were connected with many new experiences. For a boy we visited I was told that he is infected with HIV. He is has raged around on the bed just got to play with us and is happy as any other child. But with the knowledge that this child is suffering from an incurable disease from which it will die sooner or later, I had a pretty bad feeling in my stomach, a feeling of regret and helplessness, but also of joy, can this child be carefree after all Sun The chances that he can lead a fairly normal life are not all that bad. In Tanzania, the drugs delay the onset of AIDS distributed free of charge, a really important and great thing is in such a poor country where AIDS such a big problem.
That night I had once felt so right that my European dominated Understanding of values is a really absurd, as compared to the living conditions here. I sat on my computer and I have something rumgedaddelt and let the day's events and had a drink and then, of course, how could it be otherwise, I have something poured from my drink by accident to the computer. What a bummer. At first everything seemed fine, but suddenly went the "arrow-right-button" no longer. I was devastated because of this stupid key. Suddenly, everything else was unimportant, I just wanted this arrow button works again. Something so unimportant it all forced others into the background. The night was filled by only one dream that the key will not work again. The next morning, fortunately everything works again and I'm pretty happy, but also quite ashamed. Just as it is with the Internet, the Internet cafes here are all terribly slow and the connection breaks off constantly and it annoys me every time again because I am just so accustomed to the Internet can be when I want and then a working fast connection to have. This is not the case and actually that's fine too, so it is really important, but I pay now but twice per hour in a hotel where there is a reasonably reliable fast connection.
This week I am also much more mobile on the road in Morogoro. Indeed, we let the bikes in the house afloat, and now I'm more with the bike and everything is just a stone's throw away. A really good thing. But this example might be something the circumstances here demonstrate, we have repaired two bicycles, which both had a tire in a hole and the other of a tire wheel was broken and an additional eight spokes were broken. We brought the bikes in for repair in a "workshop" in the middle of the sidewalk and have it picked up later and 2000 Tanzanian Schilling paid, representing a €, including materials. That would certainly cost twenty times in Germany. I think it shows something on which level behave here the income.
I am in Tanzania and which is probably the only thing most Germans in Tanzania, have at least heard of before? The Serengeti-Park, I suppose. On Friday we were on safari, but not in the Serengeti Park in the so-called Serengeti of the South, the slightly smaller Mikumi National Park. At five in the clock in the morning we should be picked up. So force is to get up at 4:15, with small eyes make everything ready, have breakfast and time 5 am to be the punctual Germans, full of anticipation for the Safari, with drawn shoes;), ready for departure. Well think, even if it is actually white, and is warned again and again before, you fall somehow always new items on it and is annoyed by a self course, we have not been collected at five ... after a few by now fallen to eye, we went at half- seven going on, was now the sun had risen. In a large SUV with its own driver, we drove an hour to the park, part of the main road runs through the middle of the park. And so were on the edge of the main street and some more on the road already and smaller animals such as monkeys, warthogs, zebras and even also to see giraffes. That was pretty funny, kind of absurd. But it is probably a slightly larger problem, the day will totgefahren average of 3 days, I read in the guidebook. Through the park we went with our jeep drove over gravel roads and we could not even get enough of the animals and the landscape. We have even seen some lions, which is probably extremely rare. It is best to speak as well for the photos themselves, which hopefully I can do high-load, luckily Lara had an SLR camera with telephoto lens here. The downside of our visit in Mikumi was that I The first time we've really felt a tourist, photographing the car through the countryside and just as one imagines tourism, but what the heck has it been worth it.
As mentioned above, the HBC held once a month a so-called Playday. On Saturday it was time. Almost all of HBC supervised children are with their families come together to play. The HBC has ascended all the toys, it has to offer and the children delighted to see them about it. Home have the lowest toy if you can tire out even considered. Jump rope, paint, football, dolls, Barbie dolls ... a paradise. I had fun with the kids to play and was happy to see the children happy. I had such a singular opportunity to know almost all children learn from the HBC, well see at least once. At the end there was a lunch for all, from huge bowls of rice and beans were distributed. All children have sat down properly and eaten in silence, all very quiet, a nice atmosphere. On the way home I was kinda happy, the Playday I find a nice event.
Saturday was also in another respect a special day because it was the last day of Dane in Morogoro. At his farewell in the evening there was a great celebration with many guests and Pilau (with hands). I believe that is quite a nice parting was, all have once again thanked him and passed and Nadia and Lara have together organized so that all guests have a DIN A5 bring page on which they formulate a farewell, which she then pasted into a book have (where do I find that just as well known;). I find it very sad that he is now, I think he has really done a great job and I have benefited greatly from the fact that he has shown me many things and helped me with his Swahilikenntnissen.

Official Vipsuitcase Price
My first entry
Saturday at 14:47 off we went. After my departure from 28.8. to 4.9. postponed due to difficulties with the residence permit and was therefore no longer from the Hamburg airport but from the Frankfurt airport started, I am on Saturday, 4.9. run at 14:47 from the railway station Hamburg-Altona with the ICE train to Frankfurt.
The discharge, which have given me my friends and family was very nice (even if that sounds odd for a farewell). Up to 3 minutes before departure, I had put away still feeling all loose, but then was all too late. I was only really aware of that a year is not there to be a year to see all no more, but could be pretty long.
In Frankfurt, I then made eight other volunteers from my sending organization with whom I flew together to Dubai. Everything worked perfectly, although I had two kilos too much luggage. The equipment of the aircraft was great, each room had its own monitor, with a remote control with which one could choose from various movies, music and games. The food was very distinguished, lamb curry as main course, served with red wine, what a decadence. But given the fact that something like this will not next year probably, I was able to enjoy very much. After six and a half Hours we arrived safely in Dubai.
The airport in Dubai is unimaginably large, the terminal itself, in which we have arrived and departed again, was determined a mile long, just crazy, with trees and waterfalls in the building. But it was not nice, it was all applied a little too thick. In the distance we could see through the windows of the skyline of Dubai, the famous hotel that looks like a sail and I think we could also use the "Great caliph, see the previously tallest building in the world. But everything was far away.
After four hours in Dubai, of which no more Exciting to report, I am with only one other VIA eV volunteers, Lucas, then flown to Dar es Salaam. On this flight, I had a window seat so I could look at Dubai also from above. It was breathtaking, a concrete jungle in the desert. And in the truest sense of the word everywhere, as far as the eye can sand and then the small islands of the individual settlements connected by roads that look like painted in the desert. And after we had left behind Dubai, everywhere was only desert until I fell asleep. I've never seen the desert before and I could never make a presentation on this endless expanse of sand and rock.
woke up we were already in Dar. There we landed, after five and a half hour flight around 15:30 local time (14:30 Germany). I was very excited that I would probably be killed by climate, as many had warned me, but when I got off the plane to suffer in anticipation of a shock, it was amazingly all right, but warm in order. A slight breeze caused a refreshment. We we walk across the tarmac have gone to the airport terminal. There we have given our visas and have to wait too long for something to get all our luggage. The employees of VIA eV had been expecting us and taking us with our luggage. Also if I knew before, it was very strange to drive a car with the steering wheel on the right side on the left. The journey through Dar es Salaam was a real adventure. Even if the cars all look ever so shaky, one is working at all and that is the horn and which is also used almost continuously. If go to court because times will simply go down, along the lines of the most courageous wins. To date, I have two accidents and two overturned vehicles seen. But most of the time was, and is anyway congestion in Dar es Salaam. We have for a distance of vlt. Four or five kilometers damn long time, but the more it was watching. And just as we all have diligently observed, were we eyed with interest from the outside; Wazungu (Swahili for white people) are here in Tanzania, a true attraction. In the traffic jam on the road throughout traders came to the waiting cars and have their products offered. These included water, soft drinks (both looked amazingly cool), biscuits, cashew nuts, chewing gum but also ice cream, knives, soccer balls, handkerchiefs, spoons and other strange things, everything can be bought directly through the window. But our driver was very rude to all vendors and we have not had a Tanzanian shillings, and so also could not buy anything.
After we made it through the traffic jam, our driver just said "Lets go on the rough road. "Best way to describe it is not good. Besides the few major paved roads, residential areas are connected by paths that defy before potholes and bumps just like all of them completely unsecured - I would not know how the first time in the rain looks like. The trip by jeep over the "rough road" was like a ride in a cocktail shaker shaken, so I felt it. At the end of our drive we arrived in a pretty big house, where I was accommodated for the next two days until I go on to Morogoro. The owner of the house was Mama Bea, she showed me my room and I was very tired from the trip I went to sleep quickly. At Mama Bea in the past year, a German volunteer used to: Nana. It is fortunately still a week to get back because flying home, they showed me something on Monday around in the city. Be the first time I'm with the small breasts down the Dalla Dalla called. You have no timetable, but drive off then when they are full and complete is so full it really is nothing more ... if I was unlucky and are needed to could I not move on all sides as close together crushed and the ceiling was so low that I could not stand upright. Nana and I are on the ferry to a small Island where we went down to a beautiful beach. Blue sky and blue sea, white beach to a dream. On our way we were watched very closely by all sides and often by traders with "Hello my friend" approached, young children called us again and again "Mzungu" afterwards. It's a strange feeling of being watched Sun As a European, I am considered here generally considered very wealthy man and that is indeed the case, even my pocket money is far more than most monthly salaries here. So I often had the feeling that people want me to be more opposed, on the basis that they are aware that my wealth is based on their poverty. There was a feeling of shame that had arisen. But it's just a feeling of shame was what people really think about me I can not say yet.
The next day, Tuesday, I got up very early and have my stuff packed up in the expectation that Jonas, the employees of VIA would pick ev me to bring me to the bus station so I can then go on to Morogoro . But then the phone rang from Mama Bea: The car of Jonas had broken and he could not pick me. So I had to take the tour with all my luggage in the Dalla Dalla. Fortunately, Mama Bea sent me a young man who helped me with my luggage has and is jointly operated with me in Dalla, because alone would be two backpacks and a suitcase to transport very difficult on the Holperstraßen and I had not just the second day in Tanzania, the adventure Dalla Dalla cope alone.
The ride still Morogoro has lasted about three hours, arrived in Morogoro, the taxi drivers have been tempted by the window her bargain. I had my backpack with all his strength to hold on to not even before I did not even get my other luggage to be pulled in a taxi. It was incredibly determined 10 taxi drivers have been beaten around and there was nothing else than the pushiest enter. As I sat in the taxi then rose suddenly, a second man in the taxi, and I was already afraid and worry ... what have I not already heard horror stories in the taxi, but this man was probably only like to ride and so went off the ride. After a short drive we arrived at the office of the organization for which I will be working next year, the Faraja Trust Fund. After a brief welcome by the Chief Victor I was a Faraja employees and another man (who seem happy here, just ride) down to my new home. At the door of the house was a notice CARIBOU JAN (Welcome Jan) and then came out already Mareen. Mareen here is my project partner in Morogoro, she had no problems with the visa and it would often arrive a week before me. I knew previously only written by the email and now here she was still somewhere in a completely different country and welcomed me. I think we will endure well together in the coming year. Here in the house is next to Mareen also two other German volunteers girls who are still here until the end of September, Dan, a Canadian, all the love here, he has so much knowledge of Africa has a lot of reading about it speaks fluent Swahili and is a really cool type, but he flies back home next week. Then Eva still lives here, she is a kind of housekeeper, she cooks for us and also makes regular the house clean. I get on very well with her she is very nice and sincere man and helps us learn in Swahili. The food cooks what Eva is also very tasty. For breakfast, there is only bread and jam, but Maren had to eat the grandiose ideas, the bread with tomato and salt, so there's at least a little variety. cheese and sausage are here only as a luxury which even we can not afford to buy and not want to here something to fit. For lunch and dinner cooks Eve, mostly rice, potatoes or noodles rarely accessible to vegetables and meat rare, but everything tastes very good. Plantains and ugali (maize flour Breikloß), actually typical dishes, there was as yet not
I have only just packed my stuff in my new room I live in a transitional period will, to the better-equipped rooms, currently inhabited by the girls are free. Then came even first visit, three little Tanzanian girl, came and tried to play with us. That's what I'll probably have to get used to, because this door is always open and the neighborhood children like to come to the only white people far and wide. So here is always living in the house, but after a few hours I felt much more at home here, as even at Mama Bea in Dar es Salaam.
have Mareen After a short rest and I made their way into the city, walk about 15 minutes. On the way we are repeatedly attacked and children against us "fist to fist hit" with tano (five), a welcome. I could here ever try out my first greetings vocabulary. It's a strange feeling when you here by the roads running all people look at you and welcome one and the children run around you, as if one is famous, but I hope that will change the moment I am here for a while and so also get a chance to be perceived fairly normal.
Morogroro is a much more pleasant city than Dar, just much more transparent, not so hectic and not so much traffic jam and the climate should be in the hot season (at the December round) is also much more pleasant than in Dar es Salaam. Here I have also not as strong a feeling that people are against me in an unfavorable position. Although Morogroro is also quite a big city it feels like a family here.
employed in the first time I'm chiefly in the Swahili language is spoken here to learn. Although I have already had lessons in Germany, but now it is here to cram vocabulary and to gain practice. This actually works quite well, I'm constantly on me to try here and Eve is very tolerant, although I do sometimes serious mistakes. Anyway it is very helpful that I have learned the grammatical foundations already in Germany. I hope that I will make rapid progress.
On Thursday, I again shared with the Mareen Faraja office visits in order to determine when we will start to work and do what we are. We were first again encouraged to do everything possible as quickly as possible to learn Swahili. We were given two months before we can really speak well. Otherwise we were left quite free to choose where we put our priorities in volunteering. Mareen, which has already completed a Teacher Training Programme, want to teach just as our predecessors have done the same in school. I've got great respect for, but I can well imagine the try out, maybe I find it's not even that hard. To first get an overview of the work of Faraja, we were invited on Monday once again come to the office so we then once all the projects of Faraja can be shown and so then we can decide better where to start, we want to work . The first time we will probably still with the volunteers who are currently here go along just to see what the views like this and to learn from you.
At noon we are in a restaurant gone and each court have paid 5000 shillings, or two about 2.50 Euro, a quarter of what you would pay in Germany. Everything here is much cheaper than in Germany and I have to first get used to the new currency and the new prices in order to not be ripped off. For many people we have here the feeling that they're expecting of us knows more expensive prices than they require of the Tanzanians. As it is well informed to know what a thing costs normally. Here we can help Dan with his experience and Eva.
Here at the home of Eva is always something going on every evening, many people come by to meet here with us (especially talk to Dan) or to just hang, as I said the door is always open for all. Thursday had two of them birthday and we threw a party for them. There was soda (soft drinks) and pilau (rice with meat and salad) and sweet, a real feast. And I've eaten together with the Tanzanian Pilau with his hands that was pretty funny, but was not that hard to knead because the rice was very good and so good to lead with salad in his mouth was. But do not worry, it washes her hands before and is even with the right hand, with the left to do other things here ... The Tanzanians have enjoyed, I also believe that I am at your custom I tried. All the people here make the life out first, it slowly built a family feeling and it feels good, even if it's family at home can never be replaced. Yes there is a little homesick by =)
The house is pretty big way, there is a large living room, a kitchen, the second first glance be seen as a kitchen, two showers (cold, matter of getting used) , two toilets (one European and one African), a room where we hang our towels and seven bedrooms, each with a bed. To this end we have a courtyard where a scaffold above a water tank it says. From this stand you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Uluguru Mountains, where it is not just hazy.
On Friday Eid, the end of Ramadan is celebrated here was the great, all people were free, it was a school-free and all the people were very left out, they finally allowed to eat again during the day. And suddenly it is much quieter in the city. During Ramadan, namely sounded all along the loud prayer of the muezzin from the tower of the mosque of the city, but with the end of Ramadan, the muezzin praying much less from the speakers.
On Friday evening we had a discussion with Tanzanian youth who we often are in the house, about homosexuality. Most Tanzanians to have an equally clear how frustrating opinion: Gays and lesbians are bad, are evil people! They argue about religion. They said things like, "God does not want" or "God created man and woman, not man and man or woman and woman" or without cause, "Ni baya tu" ("It's just bad / evil"). Man is powerless against this kind of argument. Dan, the Canadians here at home, they tried to explain that it is natural that there are people who are gay or lesbian, that they can not help it and that one should at least tolerate it. However, a Tanzanian, Ignas was even believe that people have the choice of which sex love them and they simply were to blame for their sexual orientation. Gay people are persecuted in Tanzania, not by the government or the police or punished, but you risk severe stigma and social isolation. It seems as if worlds meet here. Surprises again with globalization we are all equal here, shows how different cultures.
On Saturday we went hiking in the Berrgen. We should meet at seven clock in the morning Statdtmitte with our guide, so to get up at six on a Saturday ... We were, of course, as is appropriate for German belongs, at the meeting point on time. But no one came to pick us up, 15 min. 30min. 45min. Well we should have known that punctuality is not important here, but well just like we are wanted we will not continue to risk that someone has to wait for us. After little more than an hour finally arrived, our guide and some friends of our house (so I call the young people who are often at our house) with Canada's three girls in tow wanted with us in the mountains. It went off in a comfortable pace, we call it here, now the African pace, it is more of a stroll, just very comfortable. Once we figure out from the city were it was mountainous, Morogoro lies in a sort of valley of the Uluguru Mountains and it was steeper and steeper and steeper but the Tanzanians were in their African pace no matter how steep it was, we had unconditional Wazungu Sun keep up our problems. sweated Luckily it was not yet so hot and it was fortunately not too hot, there were many clouds in the sky, I have so had enough, after a short time ago, my T-shirt soaking wet. We quickly left the paved road and came to a still relatively wide path. But this was becoming narrower and narrower, but still drove people on motorbikes (Pikipiki) up and down by us, looked quite dangerous because from. Later we left and this narrow path and continued on our way to continue on a very narrow path that condemned in some places was steep, so one could call it almost climb from, well, I just am a city rat from northern Germany where already a small hill a mountain for me. I'm glad I had my hiking boots here;). The landscape is beautiful, bright red earth and the wide variety of plants, many palm trees and banana trees and alternating with agricultural land and ordered the steep slopes of the mountain. Also, various animals we have seen remarkable giant, flying grasshoppers and even a snake, but only a very small. The best, however, were the many small waterfalls that we have encountered again and again, with clear water. After about three hours we had reached our destination. The German House (Pension Edelweiss I think), a house on the slope of the mountain, which made the German colonialists built 1911th Today it is a bit run down and used for agricultural management (I just did not understand). It was exciting to discover this place right in the mountain as far from the city as part of the German-tansansichen history. From this place down the mountain, you had a wonderful view of the countryside and to Morogoro, but he surely would have even more beautiful and more can be if it had not been so cloudy, but there was not so hot. After about an hour for lunch and lots of photos, we were on the way back, again and again, we met people who live up there in small huts, a three-hour climb from the city, impressive. The descent went well and in the end we are pretty exhausted but no accidents reached the bottom. The consciousness soon be able to take off the boots has worn me. It was a very nice trip and after a good feeling to have moved.
On Sunday the whole morning was nothing going on so I played my first came out because my clothes by hand washing. Especially the stuff from the hike could not have even worn once. So two buckets half full of water, a rub with and without detergent, and then the clothes clean and scratch, scratch. Well 100% pure clean it with cold water have not, but it's good that the clothes at least once felt with soap water, and rough spots can be edited very well, at least fade. That was was quite exhausting and as a consequence of my first washing action I decided to wear my T-shirt once more before I put it back to the dirty laundry. Namely, they are dirty again anyway:)
On Monday Mareen and I were in Faraja Office in the expectation that we are shown the various projects of Faraja and we can orient ourselves may identify areas for us to work as volunteers in question. But as easy as we imagined it was not. We were sent by an employee to another and each told us about his project, what is being done and everything how it is financed and so on, but every time we have then asked how we could help participate in it or has always said only: "Oh Faraja is such a great organization, it will be wonderful when you see Staring you once all the projects and then seek out what you want to do it." But what we can to peek into all projects, where we point it to go or to whom can we turn everything we have said no. We will first have to find our place in the organization and find our contact and then looking very strong on its own initiative in the projects we can collaborate. The Chief Victor gave us a staff of Faraja, Mr. MUSHI (no joke), directed the show should give us a few projects, but he said only sent us on to other employees and is also starting Tuesday on a business trip to Saturday. Let's see maybe it goes ahead with it in the next week. This week we do first with the two other German girls, Nadia and Lara, and the Canadian Dan to the orphanage and the so-called Home visits with us. " In the Homevistis families are visited and offered them assistance as needed in different forms, more precisely I will then describe afterwards. Perhaps there is also something. I hope that we will find our place soon.
So I hope it works out this post to put online, because so far I had run into difficulties on the Internet, it is very slow and with my own computer in the Internet cafe I could only retrieve emails then was the link again stopped, but I will in the near future have yet to find a solution.
I hope my first post could be read fairly well, until next time
Saturday at 14:47 off we went.
